Gardeners’ Interest Group

The LSN Gardeners’ Interest Group (GIG) is a network of local gardeners who share information, resources, and friendship toward improving household food security through earth-friendly gardening practices. It began in the spring of 2007 in response to the growing number of folks interested in learning how to grow their own food at home. We meet every month to share our questions, as well as knowledge, about the various aspects of gardening. Topics follow the seasons including planning out the garden, seed selection, soil preparation, composting, using earth-friendly methods of fertilizing and managing pests, seed saving using heirlooms, rather than hybridized seeds, and the like. We’ve held workshops on topics such as making rain barrels, building cold frames, saving seeds and canning.
